December Challenge: 7 tips for a sustainable Advent season
It's time for the final sustainability challenge. The year is almost over, but December in particular is often fraught with consumption and a lot of waste. In this blog post we give you 7 tips on how to get through the Advent season sustainably.
1. Advent, Advent, the soy candle is burning
Use soy candles for the homemade Advent wreath this year. Did you know that 75% of the candles sold in Germany are made of paraffin? This is obtained from crude oil and is therefore environmentally harmful. Soy candles, on the other hand, are more sustainable and vegan. Soy wax is of plant origin, consists of a renewable raw material and is biodegradable.
2. Christmas baking and banquets with a difference
Do your Christmas shopping this year in the nearest farm shop and support local businesses. The Christmas dinner is guaranteed to be particularly delicious with regional and seasonal products. Maybe you would like to bake vegan cookies this year. Here we have presented our favorite recipes to you.
3. DIY Secret Santa
Who doesn't like to play the Christmas elf? Secret Santa is becoming more and more popular among many friends and acquaintances. It doesn't always have to be newly bought gifts. How about something homemade? The possibilities here are just as limitless: How about a peeling with sea salt, a bath bomb in the person's favorite scent, a specially selected spice or a delicious spread?
4. Support your locals
We have already mentioned that you could go shopping again in the farm shop next door. But you could also buy vouchers for your favorite restaurant and eat there with your loved ones as soon as it is possible again. The owners will be very grateful for this kind of support.
5. Gift Exchange
How about a small swap meet in your circle of acquaintances? Just exchange ideas about whether there are things that you don't need yourself that someone else would like anyway. This is a true win-win situation and, of course, saves not only valuable resources but also money at the same time. Jackpot!
6. Hot drinks to go
Even if this is really not a new tip: To avoid waste, you should take your own cup or bottle with you when you go. Of course, if you fill up the drink at home, you also save the money and can spend it on other nice things.
7. Cleanup during the Advent walk
Unfortunately, it will be a familiar picture for all of us: we take a leisurely walk, enjoy the fresh air and nature. But if we take a closer look, we see rubbish in every corner. This is a huge environmental burden and of course it just doesn't look nice. Feel free to set a good example and collect the rubbish you see lying around on your next walk. So you have done your body and the environment something good.
