The 17 Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Did you know that…

...the UN decided on 17 global and common goals aimed at eradicating poverty and creating global sustainable development by 2030?

The Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ) were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2015. The SDGs outline a new and ambitious global agenda to reduce poverty and hunger, improve health, enable equality, protect the planet and more. Education is key, unless all children and young people around the world receive a quality education, progress will be difficult.

And these are the 17 goals:

Goal 1:

End poverty in all forms, everywhere

“Poverty is not natural, it was created by people and can therefore be overcome and eradicated by taking appropriate measures. Eradicating poverty is not an act of mercy but of justice.”

Nelson Mandela, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

Goal 2:

End hunger, achieve food security and better nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture

“World agriculture could easily feed 12 billion people. That means a child who dies of hunger today will be murdered.”

Jean Ziegler, former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food

Goal 3:

Ensuring a healthy life for all people of all ages and promoting their well-being

"It is time to constitute health care as part of a 'social infrastructure' that recognizes health as a public good that must be available to all."

Goal 4:

Ensure inclusive, equitable and quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all

"So let's take up the fight against illiteracy, poverty and terror and take our books and pens in our hands. They are our most effective weapons. A child, a teacher, a pen and a book can change the world. Education is the only solution. Education is at the beginning of everything.”

Malala Yousafzai, child rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate

Objective 5:

Achieve gender equality and self-determination for all women and girls

"A society in which girls and young women can realize their full intellectual, social and political potential is also a safe, healthy and prosperous society."

Julia Gillard, former Prime Minister of Australia

Goal 6:

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

"We can only achieve all development goals if we understand how water, as a globally limited resource, is connected to the other goals."

Objective 7:

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

"Putting nuclear power plants in place without knowing where to dump the nuclear waste is like pulling off a hand grenade before knowing where to throw it."

Dieter Hildebrandt, cabaret artist, actor and author

Goal 8:

Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, productive full employment and decent work for all

“The problem is not that we want more prosperity. The problem is that we define wealth in terms of material possessions.”

Dennis Meadows, economist

Objective 9:

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and support innovation

"The purest form of insanity is to leave everything as it is and at the same time hope that something will change."

Albert Einstein, theoretical physicist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics

Goal 10:

Reduce inequality within and between countries

"Increasing the wealth of the bottom half to 1.5 or 2 percent would have achieved as much for the poor as they did with 30 years of growth, and without further crossing planetary boundaries."

Thomas Pogge, Professor of Philosophy

Goal 11:

Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

“Sustainability means: Can you continue in the long run as you are doing it today? If you can't do that, then it's not sustainable."

Anselm Görres, Forum Ecological-Social Market Economy

Target 12:

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

"People keep spending money they don't have on things they don't need in order to impress people they don't like."

Danny Kaye, actor, comedian and singer

Target 13:

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

"Coming generations will not ask you which party you were in. They will want to know what you did about it when you knew the poles were melting."

Martin Sheen, American actor

Goal 14:

Conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

"We choke ourselves to death on all the plastic we throw away. It's killing our oceans. We ingest it through the fish we eat."

Kevin Bacon, American actor

Objective 15:

Protect, restore and promote their sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

"We live in a dangerous time. Man controls nature before he has learned to control himself.”

Albert Schweitzer

Target 16:

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels

“You have to take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence strengthens the tormentor, never the tormented.”

Elie Wiesel, writer and Nobel Peace Prize winner

Goal 17:

Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development

"We can be the first generation to succeed in eradicating poverty, just as we could be the last to have the chance to save our planet."

Ban-Ki Moon, UN Secretary-General from 2007 to 2016
